Prenatal massage is specially designed for the expectant mother. There are special considerations for pregnant clients, areas that need to be avoided or done differently. We never use deep pressure with pregnant clients, even in the first trimester. The most notable difference between a prenatal massage and a standard massage is the client positioning. In a standard massage, the client lies face up (supine) for half of the massage and face down (prone) for the other half. Pregnant clients spend half the massage on their left side and half of the massage on their right side. A special bolster is placed in front of them to rest the top leg on. This positioning makes side-lying more comfortable and makes it easier to work on the upper leg. Because of the changes to a woman's body in pregnancy, side-lying can be uncomfortable without these bolsters. |
