We practice Ingham Method Reflexology, as taught through the International Institute of Reflexology (www.reflexology-usa.net). We have a therapist who is currently finishing the certification process, at a stage we call a Reflexology Intern.
Reflexology is not massage, though it is often included with massage, partially because many practioners are also massage therapists.
A normal reflexology session lasts 30-60 minutes. The only articles of clothing that need to be removed are your shoes and socks, though your pants may be bunched up a little bit. The whole time is spent working on the foot area. Reflexology techniques are different from massage in that the therapist is working reflex points, not muscles or fascia. The reflexologist is trying to get to each reflex point in the foot, whereas in massage the focus is usually either on long smooth strokes, or specific work in a trigger point or tight muscle. The reflex points correspond to different areas of the body. For example, if you look at the way a spine curves, you can see the same curve on the medial aspect of the foot. We use reflexology to relax and relieve tension. If you are interested in more facts about reflexology, please click here.
